Keypoint speaker biographies

John Damilakis is Professor and Director of the Department of Medical Physics at the University of Crete School of Medicine and the University Hospital of Heraklion, Greece. He has held leading international positions, including President of the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP), the European Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics (EFOMP), EURAMED, and the Hellenic Association of Medical Physics. He currently serves on ICRP Committee 3, is Vice President of IUPESM, and contributes to the EuroSafe Imaging Campaign. His research focuses on medical dosimetry, radiation protection, and artificial intelligence in medical imaging. He has authored 284 PubMed-indexed publications, received 11,636 citations, achieved an h-index of 58, and earned numerous awards for his scientific contributions.

Mika Kortesniemi works as the Professor of Medical Physics at the University of Helsinki, and as the Chief Medical Physicist at the HUS Diagnostic Center, University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital, Finland. His professional, teaching and research focus is on the quality assurance, radiation dosimetry, optimisation and radiation protection in x-ray imaging, especially related to the computed tomography and utilisation of artificial intelligence. Dr Kortesniemi is also actively involved in international organisations including IAEA, ICRP, IOMP, EFOMP and ESR.

Andrea Magistrelli is Vice Chair of Committee 3 (Radiation Protection in Medicine) of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and President of the Radiation Protection Committee of the Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology (SIRM). Dr. Magistrelli has a Post-graduate degree in Radiology and is the Head of Palidoro Diagnostic Radiology Unit of Bambino Gesu’ Children’s Hospital, an Italian leading tertiary care pediatric center. His professional work is dedicated to radiation protection, quality and safety in medical imaging, with a particular focus on pediatric radiology.

M. Mahesh, MS, PhD, is Professor of Radiology, Cardiology, and Environmental Health at Johns Hopkins University and serves as Chair of key radiation oversight committees. A board-certified medical physicist, his research focuses on CT, cone-beam CT, interventional fluoroscopy, artificial intelligence, and radiation risk communication. He is Board Chair of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) in 2026 and has held leadership roles in RSNA, IOMP, NCRP, and ICRP. Dr. Mahesh is Associate Editor of the Journal of the American College of Radiology and a fellow of multiple international professional societies.

Geraldine O’Reilly is the Chief Physicist and Radiation Protection Adviser at St. James’s Hospital, Dublin. She has been actively involved in the development of radiation safety legislation, standards and guidance at national and international level for almost 30 years. She is a member of the Article 31 Group of Experts, an advisory body to the European Commission on matters relating to radiation protection, and the chair of the Medical Exposure Working Party, a sub committee to the Article 31 Group. She is a member of Committee 3 of ICRP and has worked with the IAEA on a number of technical documents and training activities. She lectures in diagnostic imaging and radiation protection on a number of undergraduate and post graduate courses.

William Small, Jr., MD, FACRO, FACR, FASCO, FASTRO, is Professor and Chairman of Radiation Oncology and Director of the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center at Loyola University’s Stritch School of Medicine, and Vice President of Oncology for Trinity Health IL/IN. A Northwestern University graduate, he has spent more than 30 years as a clinician, educator, and researcher, leading numerous clinical trials. Internationally recognized for his work in gynecological cancers, he also specializes in gastrointestinal and breast malignancies. Dr. Small serves on ICRP Committee 3 and several professional organizations. He has authored over 350 publications, 38 book chapters, and seven books.

David Sutton, PhD, CRadP, CSci, FSRP, FBIR, is a medical physicist with more than 35 years’ experience in radiation protection and diagnostic radiology physics. Formerly Head of Medical Physics at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, he has retired from the UK National Health Service and holds an honorary chair at the University of Dundee. He currently chairs ICRP Committee 3, serves on the ICRP Main Commission, and contributes to several ICRP task groups. He is also Chair of RPA2000, the UK accreditation body for Radiation Protection Experts. A dedicated educator and international expert, he has advised the IAEA, served on numerous committees, and authored influential publications in radiological physics and radiation protection. He is a Fellow of IPEM and SRP, and an Honorary Fellow of the BIR.
